Cling to Scripture AND Follow the Spirit

We should cling tightly to scripture but also emphasize following the Spirit of God.

Ever notice that Jesus was constantly confounding the top theologians?

Notice that Jesus often did things that might not be easy to find a scriptural reason for doing so? Like spitting mud into someone's eye? Casting demons into pigs? Walking on water? Turning water into wine?

Why did Jesus do those things without an obvious scriptural precedent? He was following His Father which is Spirit!

Joh 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Notice how Jesus said He followed the Father:

Joh 5:19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

So Jesus did what He saw the Father doing. So right before he put mud in a blind man's eyes, He must have seen the Father do it first! Does this make sense?

What about what Jesus spoke?

Joh 12:49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.

What can we learn from this?

Now the Spirit of Truth is here to guide us in our daily lives and in all truth.

Joh 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

This is not an excuse to ignore scripture. For the Spirit and the Word agree. Even though Jesus did things that wasn't easy to find a scriptural precedent for he did NOT VIOLATE scripture.

The Spirit and the Word agree!

1Jn 5:7-8 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. (8) And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

Cling to the scriptures tightly! And follow the Spirit of God!

Rom 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Rom 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Rom 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
